The IMO Ballast Water Management Convention (2004) has been ratified and requires all ships to implement a ballast water management system. It involves an environmental responsibility for the shipping industry to put measures in place to avoid pollution through the transfer of non-indigenous bio species from one area of the world to another in the ship’s water ballast.

This course is structured to provide industry professionals with an appreciation of the requirements and a challenge associated with ballast water management, and covers the well-publicised core issues of the problem of transporting invasive species in ships' ballast water. The course will ensure that company and organisations officials are better prepared to implement and monitor the Convention.

The objectives of the course is enabling the participants to become familiar with the ballast water management methods commonly used to meet the requirements of the International Convention for the Control and Management of ships' Ballast Water and sediments and thus minimize environmental damage caused by the transfer of ballast water.

Minimum Entry Requirements

There are no prerequisites for this Course, however, in order to fully benefit from the training, it is recommended that the participants are either new entrants to the shipping industry or professional staff in shipping companies, ship brokers, port agencies, insurance inspectors, banks and similar service organisations can gain a valuable understanding of their customers roles and responsibilities.

The comprehensive documentation that accompanies the course has been designed as a useful guide for future reference.
